Whether you're redecorating, correcting an installation error, or simply improving the functionality of your home, switching a door handle lever from left-handed to right-handed (or vice versa) is a task that can be easily accomplished with a few tools and some simple steps.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of reversing your door handle lever, making it a straightforward project even for those new to DIY home improvements. Let's get started!

Step 1: Identify the Set Screw

The first step in switching your door handle lever is to locate the set screw. The set screw is a small screw that holds the lever in place on the spindle (the metal rod that connects the two halves of the handle). You can usually find this screw on the side of the lever closest to the door. Depending on your handle, it might be a flathead, Phillips, or hex screw.

Step 2: Remove the Lever

Once you've identified the set screw, use your screwdriver or Allen wrench to loosen it (Design House door handles come with a wrench to use at this stage). You don't need to remove the screw completely; just loosen it enough so that you can pull the lever off the spindle. Carefully pull the lever away from the door. If the lever is stubborn, wiggle it gently to release it from the spindle.

Step 3: Reposition the Interior Mechanism

With the lever removed, you'll need to adjust the interior mechanism to accommodate the new direction. This step can vary slightly depending on the design of your door handle, but generally, you'll want to:

  1. Remove the lever on the opposite side of the door by loosening its set screw and pulling it off the spindle.
  2. Rotate the spindle or the latch mechanism (whichever is appropriate for your handle) to the new orientation.
  3. Ensure that the latch mechanism is aligned correctly with the new lever direction.

Step 4: Reattach the Lever

Now that the interior mechanism is set, it's time to reattach the lever. Take the lever you removed initially and position it on the spindle in the new direction. Make sure it fits snugly against the door. Tighten the set screw to secure the lever in place. Repeat this process for the lever on the opposite side of the door.

Step 5: Test the Lever

After reattaching both levers, test the handle to ensure that it operates smoothly. Open and close the door a few times to check for any sticking or misalignment. If everything works correctly, you've successfully switched your door handle lever!

Switching a door handle lever from left-handed to right-handed (or vice versa) is a quick and easy project. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your door handles are correctly oriented to suit your needs. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or a home improvement novice, this guide will help you tackle the task with confidence.

Remember, the key to a successful switch is taking your time and ensuring that each component is securely in place. If you encounter any difficulties or specific design variations, consult the manufacturer's instructions for additional guidance. Happy home improving!
